STORY BEHIND THE PIECE
Nefertari was an Egyptian queen, the first of the Great Royal Wives of Ramesses the Great and the one he loved the most. Her name means ‘beautiful companion’. She was highly educated and able to both read and write hieroglyphs, a rare skill at the time. She used these skills in her diplomatic work, corresponding with other prominent royals of the time. Ramesses II infatuation with her is clearly reflected in the beauty, magnificence and elegance of her tomb, which remains the most lavishly decorated of all in the Valley of the Queens.
